Cleaning gutters can be a difficult and somewhat dangerous job. It’s also a job that many people ignore or often forget about. It’s not something that needs to be done daily, weekly or even monthly but, it can take upwards of a few hours or more, depending on the complexity (height, terrain, etc.) of the job. However, it is recommended that it be done twice yearly to avoid the build-up of debris and potential plugging of downspouts, which can lead to structural damage.
Why do I need to clean my gutters?
The simple answer is; because replacing broken gutters, damaged roofs and fascia boards can cost thousands of dollars. Water can potentially penetrate through the soffit area from a damaged or clogged gutter. So have your gutters cleaned regularly!
How often do I need to clean them?
Twice a year, once in the spring and once before winter is great, especially if your home is located in or near a wooded area. So let Select Property Maintenance take care of it for you!
How do I clean my gutters?
If you choose to do it yourself, you will need the following items: ladder, gloves, small hand rake or pole, hose and a garbage bag and bucket. Set up the ladder close to the gutter. (Be sure to avoid any overhead wiring) Once you’re within reach of the gutter and wearing your gloves, begin removing the debris. If you’re uncomfortable with heights, you can throw the debris out of the gutter and collect it up later once you’re off the ladder. Or you can put the debris in the garbage bag as you go. Just be careful! If you find any objects that are stuck in the gutter, use your hand rake. Be careful not to cause any damage to the gutter, as that could cost you money in the long run, too. Once you get one section complete, get off the ladder and move it to another section that needs to be cleaned. And don’t forget to clean the gutter strainers so water can flow freely from the gutter and through the downspout. Repeat until the entire gutter is cleaned out.
